Voices on Racial Discrimination - An Interactive Documentary
New Media | Data Visualization | D3.js
When I attended school at UC Santa Cruz, I became involved with activism and social justice circles. Even though these groups were generally conscious of social inequities and racism, a lot of racialized individuals still experienced discrimination on a regular basis. With the mentorship of our professor, a fellow classmate and I began conducting interviews with some of the folks that were impacted by this. After gathering the interviews, we spent countless hours categorizing each audio clip under specific keywords, and building a database. I then designed and implemented an data visualization / interactive documentary to showcase this information. With the help of d3.js I was able to build a conceptual map that attempts to portray through the connections that these experiences draw, the systemic nature of racism. I am currently on the lookout for funding and more collaborators to continue expanding upon this idea.
